Coyle Strikes It Lucky With Holden

Not many people outside of Bolton had heard of Stuart Holden before the American bagged the winning goal against Blackburn on Saturday. Untested at club football’s highest level, Holden was plucked from Houston Dynamo of MLS in January and has never looked back.

Owen Coyle first caught sight of the dogged midfielder while watching telly in the comfort of his armchair at home. Impressed with his intelligence and exuberance, Coyle invited Holden for a trial at Bolton towards the end of last year. Both parties were more than eager to make the arrangement permanent when the January transfer window opened and nearly a year after it all began, Stuart Holden is starting to pay off some of his manager’s faith.

But it could have been so different…

  1. Coyle actually invited Holden for a trial at Burnley, and had offered Holden a deal. But then Coyle took the job at Bolton and brought the deal for Holden with him. It took several months to sort it all out. After initially being on a short term deal, Coyle offered Holden a full contract at the end of the season last spring.
