January Transfer Surprises
A Bargain for Bent
The £24 million that Aston Villa spent to acquire Darren Bent a couple of weeks ago is now looking like good value for money. After all, Chelsea shelled out £50 million for a moody striker with a history of injury problems. Liverpool spent £35 million on an unproven attacker with only six months experience in the Premier League. But with Darren Bent you know exactly what you’re going to get. Nothing flashy. Nothing fancy. But exactly what you need: goals.

Okay, maybe it’s not much of a surprise considering Arsene Wenger’s stubborn reluctance to spend money in previous transfer windows. But surely this was the time to make an exception. With Thomas Vermaelen’s continued injury problems, Arsenal needed a good centre back to keep their title hopes alive. Instead, the Gunners find themselves in a familiar position: on the heels of the league leaders, hoping they won’t be found out by the glaring holes in their squad.
