Van Der Sar - Master of the penalty box
We are still scratching our heads over the PFA Player of the Year award going to Ryan Giggs, the old Welsh bloke who has started a stunning 12 league games for the Red Devils this season and finished precisely none of them. A legend he may be, but please save the ingratiating back-slapping for his testimonial. This is an award for player of the season. That’s right. SEASON. Was the election rigged? Were the votes split evenly among a couple of the other more-deserving nominees, giving Giggsy some space to squeak through? (It wouldn’t be the first time…) For us the award should have been given to another old geezer, Edwin Van Der Sar, who has been near impenetrable for much of the past year. The highlight was a run of 1,289 minutes without letting in a goal. During that period, Man Utd took 35 out of 39 possible points and vaulted from 3rd to 1st place, by way of thrashing Chelsea 3-0. They haven’t looked back since. To the Welshman’s credit, though, during that same three-month span of defensive perfection, the PFA Player of the Year did bag his only league goal of the season. Well done,Giggsy!!
