Carling Cup Semi-Final 1 First Leg
Advantage Spurs…
Tottenham thrashed Burnley in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final this evening at White Hart Lane. The presentation of Jermaine Defoe to the Spurs faithfull before kick-off seemed to initially boost Burnley. After dispensing of Fulham, Chelsea and Arsenal on their run to the semis, the Championship side played the first 45 with poise, intelligence and purpose. A Patterson tap-in sent Burnley 1-0 up at the half. They say its a game of 2 HalveS and that proved to be the case as Harry Redknapp’s side came roaring out of the blocks after the break and sent four past their visitors. Surely thats the end of Burnley’s magical run. For Tottenham, after a miserable early season, Defoe’s imminent arrival could inspire them to silverware after all.
Good for spurs. Left for dead at the beginning of the season, they are now close to being the first team in the league to win some silverware this year. And good for Burnley, too. Although, having both these clubs in the semis begs the perrenial question: How important is the Carling Cup anyway?
