Writers' 'Footballer of the Year' Award
The press speak out
Here’s the scoop. Tonight, London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel will host the annual Football Writers’ Association ‘Footballer of the Year‘ Awards dinner. Liverpool‘s Steven Gerrard officially bagged the prize in mid-May but the man himself will be in London to accept the honor voted on by the English football press.
Becoming the first Liverpool player to win the award since John Barnes in 1990, Gerrard beat out several top contenders to the title including Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo, Frank Lampard and the recently crowned PFA ‘Player of the Year’ Ryan Giggs. Gerrard scored 23 goals during the campaign leading Liverpool to within 4 points of the Premier League title. But the debate goes on. Who really is this year’s player of the year? With Giggs receiving the players’ nomination, Gerrard receiving the nod from the press and Van Der Sar receiving the Footy Factor vote, the jury is still out. And that’s exactly why we love the beautiful game. Everyone has a different opinion.
