Beckham Can’t Catch a Break

Beckham Can’t Catch a Break

You can now add 7-foot-tall, 325-pound basketball megastar Shaquille O’Neal to the recent list of people who want to give Becks the beat down. David Beckham has rejected “Shaq’s” offer to appear in his new reality TV show. The series will follow O’Neal as he squares off against other superstar athletes in their own sport. In one episode, for instance, Shaq swims against American gold medalist Michael Phelps, and in another, Shaq boxes retired champion Oscar de la Hoya.  Sounds like pure magic on the small screen? But leave it to Becks to spoil the fun. The Galaxy player has turned down the challenge to bend his trademark free kicks with Shaq between the posts. In response, Shaq declared on his Twitter account: ”Today is ‘David Beckham is scared of Shaq Day’, he should be scared, he can never score a goal on me.”

We fully expect Beckham to take up the challenge in the future. However, we also predict he will leave the show in the middle of the taping, fly to Milan for a Dolce & Gabbana photo shoot and declare, “I have to stay in top modeling form ahead of the 2012 Olympics in London. I’m committed to the Shaq project, but right now, for my country, I need to be with D&G.” Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan will then publicly rebuke Beckham’s leadership and lack of commitment to American pop culture.

The USA has produced some world-class keepers in recent years: Tim HowardBrad Friedel and Kasey Keller come to mind. But who knows?  With the wingspan of a small jetliner and hands as big as oven mitts, 37-year-old basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal could end up being the best of the bunch.
