Emmanuel Adebayor – Man City

Most Hated Men in Football

Most Hated Men in Football

Emmanuel Adebayor had been on the fringes of our list of Most Hated Men in Football for quite some time, but his recent behavior in the Manchester CityArsenal match now demands his inclusion. There is no doubt that the Togo player is a talent. When he’s motivated, there’s no more lethal a striker in the world. But when he can’t give a toss, Adebayor is mediocre at best. All too often he can be a brooding, taciturn force that sucks the spirit out of his teammates – which is the epitome of selfishness in a team sport like football. And that’s why Arsenal fans were glad to see the back of him this summer when he bid adieu to the club that he owed so much to and went north to Manchester City in search of greater riches.

Of all the parties involved, you’d think it would be Arsenal who were relishing a bit of comeuppance when the two clubs first met again – but it was the moody striker himself who showed up for last Saturday’s match keen on exacting some sort of revenge. He almost had his wish, scoring the goal that put City ahead for good. But then, in a deliberate attempt to incite his former fans, Adebayor celebrated his goal by sprinting the length of the pitch. He later (accidentally?) stamped on the head of former strike partner Robin Van Persie – following it up post-match with a rather hollow apology. It was a performance that not only solidified Arsenal fans’ fury, but the rest of league’s as well.

its quite sad, as supporters of AFC we were willing at first to look past Greedybayors petulance, laziness and the cancerous force of nature that he brought to the dressing room by squabbling with young and older teammates. It seems now that Ade has truly crossed over to the dark side by parting arsenal on such bad terms with the fans after demanding a raise in salary, which he received. Showing contempt to wenger and rvp by the stamping incident and goading the away fans at the eastlands. As a gooner I can understand the need to exact revenge on his former employers by scoring a vital goal against them at home, what i cannot forgive is the callous nature in which he treated former teammates and the small gooner minority that appreciated his short and eventful arsenal career and the manner by which he has tried to throw arsene under the bus with post exit accusations of treachery and money grubbing, shame on you emmanuel

Paul – I agree with your analysis of Adebayor. But what I don’t believe is how you portray Arsenal fans as the innocent victim in this whole situation. You lot got several (or at least one) good seasons out of him and then sold him on for an absolute bundle of money. Sure, he rubbed his goal in your face in Manchester but it’s not his fault Arsene won’t spend the cash to sign a better player. If you had bought Benzema we wouldn’t even be talking about Ade.
