You know the old Rolling Stones tune “Time is on my Side?” Well, Sir Mick Jagger might want to think about suing Sir Alex Ferguson for copyright infringement.

The fallout from Sunday’s Manchester derby continued yesterday with the Guardian newspaper revealing that Man United statistically receive more added-on time when they head into injury time chasing the game. Over the past three seasons the Old Trafford faithful watched on average 4 minutes and 17 seconds of injury time when losing compared to 3 minutes and 11 seconds when winning.

We’ve always been of the belief that you play to the final whistle. The best teams in world football feed off points garnered as the clock ticks down. It’s survival of the fittest in its most literal sense.

But with the ball actually in play for an average of 55 minutes during a Premier League match, some might ask what’s the difference between an extra minute here or there? The answer: Owen’s heroics, which show it only takes a second to bang in the winner.
