Try telling Peter Crouch that the Carling Cup means nothing. Fresh from a bum-lashing at the hands of London rivals Chelsea, the lanky striker bagged three goals against Preston North End to send Spurs through to the fourth round. Joining strike partner Jermain Defoe in the Hat Trick stakes, Crouch’s intelligent movement and delicate touch proved too much for Preston to handle as Tottenham ran out 5-1 winners on the night.
1st goal (14): Running into the six yard box unmarked, Crouch opened the scoring for the visitors with a coolly taken side foot volley from a sumptuous Gareth Bale left-wing cross. Rating: 6
2nd goal (77): His second goal, Spurs’ third, put the match out of reach for the Championship side. Bursting through the Preston defense, Aaron Lennon broke into the box and passed the ball across towards an on rushing Crouch to tap in for the easiest of goals. The kind of chance your gran could put away. Rating: 4
3rd goal (90+2): What better way to sign off than with a moment of pure genius. Coming late into injury time, another Lennon cross provided Crouchy with the goal of the tie; an expertly taken back heel volley leaving the keeper with no chance. Rating: 9
Hat trick aggregate: 6.33
