The Making of a Winning Premiership Squad

The Making of a Winning Premiership Squad

With Manchester United it’s followed the glory winning philosophy of blending promising, wet-behind-the-ears talent with been-there-done-that veterans of the big stage. With Arsene Wenger‘s focus on youth at Arsenal, you can see that all first-team members have been brought in since 2003.

The squads of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City have been dramatically affected by the arrivals of new managers and owners. At Liverpool, besides Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, the entire squad can be attributed to Rafa Benitez‘s wheeling and dealing in the transfer market since his arrival in 2004. At Chelsea, besides John Terry and Frank Lampard, the foundations of the team, the rest of the squad has been assembled by Roman‘s roubles which have been flooding Stamford Bridge since his purchase of the club in 2003. And the most dramatic example of how new leadership alters the course of the development of a club’s squad is Manchster City who have bought nearly an entire new squad since the arrival of Sheikh Mansour in 2008.

  1. There’s only one Bacary Sagna – he is totally my favourite player! He was great in the Champions League against Arsenal, and deserves a few breaks :)
