Seventh Week Conclusions in the Premiership

Seventh Week Conclusions in the Premiership

Wolves fans are gutted. Prior to this weekend’s fixtures, Portsmouth had lost their first seven matches. While losing runs can’t go on forever, every club in the country was licking it’s lips at the prospect of playing the South Coast side. But on a glorious Saturday afternoon, in front of a packed MolineuxWolves fans witnessed utter horror as their team became the first club to give up points to Europe’s worst team. What a way to start your week.

Congratulations Wenger. Already the most successful Arsenal manager in terms of trophies won, Arsene Wenger this week celebrated his record-breaking tenure at Arsenal by thrashing Blackburn 6-2. In a match brimming with Arsene’s philosophy of attacking, full-flowing football, the Gunners emphasized their title challenge by upping their goals to game ratio to a staggering 3.42 (24 goals in 7 matches.) The second most prolific team in the league, Liverpool, has a ratio of 2.75 (22 goals in 8 matches.)

Carlo Ancelotti is no Luis Felipe Scolari. Liverpool lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge sending Chelsea back to the top of the Premiership. Prior to the match strong comparisons could be drawn between the early Chelsea reign of Ancelotti and that of the ill-fated Scolari… Both had a beginner’s grasp of the English language… Both had won their first five matches scoring goals for fun… Both had yet to be tested by a top four side. This time last year Liverpool ended Chelsea’s 86 match unbeaten home record. Three months later Luis Felipe Scolari was gone. Ancelotti will hope that this victory guarantees a far better future than that experienced by his Brazilian predecessor.

Is Gianfranco Zola the next to go? Routed in 19th place, West Ham have lost three and drawn two of their last five fixtures and haven’t won since opening day against Wolves. Although Zola’s magic has abandoned him of late, a 92nd minute Stanislas equalizer against fellow strugglers Fulham does provide a glimmer of hope for the Eastenders. Move over Phil Brown and Paul Hart, guess who’s odds for the sack have just shortened dramatically.

Birmingham can’t score but can defend. The Midlands club have bagged a miserly 5 goals in 8 matches and have failed to hit the target on 3 occasions. The good news for Alex McLeish is that all five goals have come from different players: Larsson, Bowyer, McFadden, O’Connor, Phillips. While there is plenty of room for improvement on the attacking front, Birmingham can thank a defense that has leaked fewer goals than Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs for their above water league placing.
