Five Reasons Why Rafa Benitez Won’t Get Sacked

Five Reasons Why Rafa Benitez Won’t Get Sacked

There are plenty of reasons to be disappointed with Rafa Benitez right about now. Liverpool head into this weekend’s match against Manchester United with the prospect of lodging their fifth defeat on the trot. After such high expectations for this season, Liverpool have been finally exposed as a two-man team. But while many people are calling for Rafa’s head, we give you five reasons why the Spaniard will be sticking around Anfield, at least for a few more months.

1. No One Has the Power to Do It. Since purchasing Liverpool, American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have been either too busy courting investors for the club or one-upping each other in the board room. Neither holds a candle to Benitez’s popularity, even at this low point for the Spaniard, and both are savvy enough to understand the backlash that would come from attempting such a power play.

2. Who Would Replace Rafa? After a string of managerial wet blankets (remember Roy Evans?), Liverpool have finally found a manager who can bring them silverware. If you sack Benitez, then what? Hire Gareth Southgate? John Barnes? Why don’t you just bring Gerard Houllier back?

3. Fernando Torres Would Be Off in a Flash. Would you risk losing the club’s biggest asset by cutting loose his mentor and compatriot? Didn’t think so.

4. It Would Be Expensive. Rafa just put pen to paper on a new contract earlier this year – in the wake of Liverpool’s 4-0 destruction of Real Madrid. (Remember that?). Breaking that deal, which runs until 2014, would cost the club a lot of money – money it clearly can’t afford to waste considering the owners’ reluctance to spend big in the summer transfer market.

5. There’s Still Time to Turn Things Around. In his first season, Rafa won the Champions League with a very mediocre team. Clearly, he has the ability. And let’s not forget that Liverpool’s six losses this season have been against Chelsea, Fiorentina, LyonSunderlandAston Villa, and Spurs – each beatable, but none to be embarrassed about.
