Mourinho Seems Destined to Crash the Liverpool-Man Utd Party

Sunday’s match between Manchester United and Liverpool has all the ingredients for an October classic: Fernando TorresNemanja VidicAntonio ValenciaGlen JohnsonAlex Ferguson v Rafa Benitez. All of it being played against the backdrop that one more loss for Liverpool would mean curtains on their title aspirations.

But the most intriguing character in this storyline won’t even be present. And it’s unlikely his name will even be uttered by commentators, although he will be lurking at least in the back or Rafa Benitez‘s mind: Jose Mourinho.

It is becoming ever more likely that the Special One will be pulling the strings at one of these two clubs in the near future. At Inter Milan for only a year, the charismatic talisman has already outgrown his present surroundings. After all, Inter is not even the biggest club in Milan. But that’s besides the point. Serie A hasn’t had the prestige that Jose craves in many a season. It’s either Barcelona, Real Madrid, or it’s back to England.

Manchester United fans like to avoid the unthinkable, but Sir Alex will have to retire some day and the list of candidates who could guarantee to extend the Scotsman’s great tradition of success adds up to a grand total of one. (The “special” one.) Likewise, as the Anfield trophy cabinet gathers dust and Rafa Benitez inches ever closer to the chopping block, Liverpool‘s executives hoping to steady the ship will no doubt try to lure Mourinho, the master of consistency.

Jose makes no secret of his love for the high-octane Premiership, and despite their duty to remain objective, the British press make no secret of their love for Jose. Many do doubt whether the Liverpool or United faithful could forget the past injustices inflicted by the Portugueezer during his Chelsea days. But winning has always had a way of swinging public opinion, and when it comes to that department, Mourinho is in a class apart.
