Forget Simao, Forlan, Asenjo and Maxi. Where in the world is Sergio Aguero? The Argentine playmaker and one of football’s most sought after talents was nowhere to be seen as Atletico were put through their paces ahead of the crunch European tie.
When you’re struggling to find your feet in the league and your European hopes are fading, the last thing you need is to head into the biggest match of the season without your star player. Following a demoralizing weekend loss to Athletic Bilbao, rumors swirled through the Spanish Capital that an injured Sergio Aguero would not play against Chelsea.
As Atletico lined up for the ‘must not lose’ Champions League tie in front a vibrant home support, Sergio Aguero did finally appear from the dressing room – but as an observer from the bench. With time ticking down and Chelsea seemingly content to stroll to a scoreless draw, new manager Quique Sanchez Flores introduced his half-fit superstar and the rest is history.
While Sergio Aguero will rightfully grab the headlines with his sensational double, credit must be given to Sanchez Flores. The former Valencia man tricked everyone (even us!) with his pre-match decision to hide Aguero from the cameras.
