Becks Gets Real

Becks Gets Real

Liverpool v Manchester City? Tish tosh! The biggest match of the weekend is actually taking place in Seattle and involves a certain Mr. Posh – as our MLS correspondent Andy Taylor reports:

Sunday night’s MLS Cup Final is set with an unheralded Real Salt Lake squad squaring off against the LA GalaxyDavid Beckham and his ever-growing collection of tattoos. LA overcame crosstown rivals Chivas USA in the quarterfinals. A spectacular one-touch cross from Beckham to a streaking Landon Donovan sparked the attack that resulted in the game-winning penalty kick. The diagonal cross from midfield was a thing of beauty, as Beckham sent a slicing ball with his right foot 50-60 yards to the feet of the charging LA captain at the edge of the box. While Beckham’s performances on the whole have been relatively pedestrian, this move was a subtle reminder that Becks still possesses certain skills no one in MLS can equal. LA then knocked off a strong Houston Dynamo squad, led by US national team regulars Brian Ching and Stuart Holden, to reach the final.

Real Salt Lake spoiled MLS front office dreams of an LA-Chicago final by beating the Fire on penalties. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando made three sterling saves, all to his left side, to help Salt Lake reach its first ever final. Undoubtedly, the League would have preferred the Fire, led by Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Brian McBride. This would have pitted MLS‘ two most popular and controversial international stars against one another, not to mention the current and former Golden Boys of American soccer: Donovan and McBride. But alas, MLS executives must do their best to promote a match between the Galaxy and a Real Salt Lake outfit best known for its ridiculous name and for selling Freddy Adu to Benfica. No doubt they’ll also focus their television cameras on Salt Lake’s  two biggest stars, US national team fringe players Robbie Findley and Kyle Beckerman, who sports dreadlocks that would make Bob Marley proud (”Yeah mon!”).

So who will win...Tattoos or Dreads?!
