Time for Avram to do the talking

Time for Avram to do the talking

It’s never a good sign for a manager when Avram Grant steps in as Director of Football – just ask Jose Mourinho. On Thursday, Portsmouth announced the inevitable by installing Grant in the hot seat in place of outgoing manager Paul Hart. With the South Coast club currently dead last in the Premiership, this time the former Maccabi-Haifa manager might just have bitten off more than he can stomach.

Since departing Stamford Bridge in May 2008, Avram has incessantly tried to convince anyone who will listen that he’s worthy of another top job. While Grant supporters will point to the fact that Avram was within a few inches of winning the Champions League with Chelsea, there’s one small difference at Pompey – he’s not got a pool of world class talent to choose from. And that’s exactly where Grant’s detractors come in. Many top journalists, including The Daily Telegraph’s Henry Winter, argue that Chelsea’s team of highly-professional superstars were on cruise control under Avram and that Grant in fact did very little bar fetching the odd wayward shot in training.

Having joined Pompey as Director of Football in early October, following the purchase of the club by Ali al-Faraj, Avram’s first task as manager is to restore some pride this Saturday when Manchester United travel down to the South Coast. Coincidentally Grant’s first match in charge with Chelsea was a 2-0 loss to United. We’re betting on the same score this time around.

But what about Grant’s long term goal? Surely his sole objective is to guide Portsmouth out of the relegation zone. The South Coast club sit 4 points from safety but face United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal all before the New Year. With no John Terry or Frank Lampard to call upon, it’s time for Avram to do the talking.
