Fifteenth Week Conclusions in the Premiership
Zola clutching at straws. Not for the first time this season, much loved Italian Gianfranco Zola sees his side starring relegation dead in the eyes. Sitting in 17th place, 2 points from safety, West Ham‘s season is quickly becoming in danger of unravelling at the seams. While Hammers fans have seen it all before, recent displays indicate this time could be ominously different. In the last two matches the East London club have conceded 5 goals and scored none letting slip 6 crucial points. To make matters worse, star striker Carlton Cole is injured, Upton Park terrace icon Mark Noble was red-carded in the 1-0 loss at Birmingham, and former Brum big-wigs David Gold and David Sullivan are rumoured to be interested in taking-over the club. How long before Zola snaps?
Liverpool are in deep trouble. Steven Gerrard played. Fernando Torres played. Even Alberto Aquilani played. Yet Liverpool still lost to Arsenal at Anfield. Rafa Benitez is running out of excuses. Will winning the Europa League really placate the fans and save Rafa‘s job?
Aston Villa are back in business. Villa‘s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford was the Midlands club first away league win at United in a jaw-dropping 26 years. The confidence boosting victory coupled with early season success over Liverpool and Chelsea, sees Martin O’Neill‘s side sitting pretty in 4th place, a far cry from the dismal prospects they faced following an opening day home loss to Wigan.
