If this was the court of public opinion, we would no doubt ask Roy Keane to step forward as a witness. The former Irish skipper would surely have plenty to say about McCarthy’s half-hearted preparations for Ireland ’s 2002 World Cup campaign. But for more damning evidence of his crimes, we ask you to consider this week’s encounter between Wolverhampton and Manchester United. In a match of massive implications for teams both at the top and the bottom of the Premiership, McCarthy went to Old Trafford and fielded a Wolves team made up mainly of reserve players. They were duly crushed by United 3-0. Pardon our French, but what the hell was McCarthy thinking? This was not a Carling Cup match where you might think to save one or two players for the weekend’s Premiership clash. This was the Premiership! What kind of example does that set for other teams competing for honours? And what a disappointment for Wolves fans who harbour only a few simple dreams – one of them being the dream of knocking off a giant like Man Utd? Mick didn’t even give them the chance.

The FA, predictably, is responding to the incident with kid gloves. So we hope McCarthy’s ultimate punishment will come in the form of some bad karma during the final weeks of the season, with Wolves having to rely on another team’s fixtures in their fight to avoid the drop…
