Twitter Doesn’t Love Manchester United

Twitter Doesn’t Love Manchester United

So there you have it. Granted, it’s not clear how Twitter’s research team compiled the list. If they didn’t take the context of each Tweet into account, Chelsea might have an advantage for also being areas in London or New York City and the daughter of a certain former American president. Manchester United, on the other hand, can be expressed a number of different ways  including “ManU,” “ManUtd,” “Man Utd,” “Manure” and so on – and Twitter’s researchers probably didn’t add all of them together.

Nevertheless, the list is an interesting look at what was on the minds of the public in 2009. Considering that most Twitter users are in the United States , it’s no surprise that football teams fared so poorly while the Super Bowl takes two spots (“Super Bowl” and “Superbowl.”) But there’s hope for 2010. With the USA playing England in next summer’s World Cup, maybe next year’s list will have more of a football flavour.
