It’s become something of a tradition in football to make bold pronouncements about where the title is headed based on what the Premier League table looks like on Christmas Day. By that measure, Chelsea have definitely got it in the bag, right? Well… actually… not at all.
In what may amount to the biggest Yuletide downer since Ebeneezer Scrooge, the team that’s in first place on December 25th is actually NOT likely to be the same team that’s lifting the trophy at the end of the season. In fact, since the start of the Premier League only six of the past 17 title-winning teams (a little more than a third) were in first place at Christmas. Bah humbug!
