Eighteenth Week Conclusions in the Premiership
Although the FA Cup Third Round dominated this weekend’s football, there were some critical midweek Premier League matches that impact on teams at the top and bottom of the division. Here’s a round-up of what it all means:
Arsenal sneak back into contention. Arsene Wenger‘s younglings finished the month of November a staggering 11 points behind leaders Chelsea. Without too much hullabaloo they enter the New Year four points off the pace and with a game in hand. If Arsenal beat Bolton on Wednesday, the Gunners will leapfrog Manchester United into second spot and sit a single point off Drogba-less Chelsea.
Bolton desperate as Megson departs. Gary Megson was never accepted at the Reebok and any Bolton fan will tell you that. Amid media reports indicating that Steve Bruce, Graeme Souness and Chris Coleman had turned down the job back in October 2007, Wanderers fans knew Megson wasn’t the boards first choice and they never let the fact drop. Demanding a glamorous, sophisticated manager to continue in the footsteps of Sam Allardyce, Bolton fans instead got a scruffy, yet affable, Gary Megson. 26 months after taking over Bolton at the foot of the table, Megson leaves the side two spots better off in 18th place.
