3D is Coming to Football
On the few occasions that we’ve sat at pitch level during a football match, we’ve always been amazed at the stunning lack of depth perception you get compared to sitting higher up. From this ground level perspective, you can hardly see the space between players; everyone seems to be stepping on each other’s toes. Frankly, we’re shocked that anyone on the field can pick out a clean pass – particularly those long glory balls that Steven Gerrard likes to launch at least once a match.
All of this goes to say that perspective is everything – especially when watching sports. And this random musing brings us circuitously to the news of the day – which is something that concerns all of us who get the majority of our football over the telly: 3D is coming. When James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar was released in cinemas last month, people predicted its 3D special effects were going to revolutionize the film industry forever. But it seems like the world of television is going to get its licks first. That’s because earlier this week ESPN announced that it would launch the industry’s first network exclusively showing 3D programming.
