Americans Are Snatching Up World Cup Tickets

If you need more evidence that football is taking root in the great ole’ US of A, consider this: Besides host nation South Africa, Americans have purchased more tickets for this summer’s World Cup extravaganza than any other country on the planet.

It’s quite shocking, isn’t it? We all know England’s football fans will travel anywhere as long as there’s a pint waiting for them at the other end. The Brazilian faithful are famous for bringing a carnival with them wherever they go. And the Swiss… actually, don’t even get me started on those bloody Swiss!

But the Yanks? Frankly, it’s hard to believe: That the prospect of seeing such luminaries as Dempsey, Donovan, and DeMerit would prompt so many to head halfway around the world during their summer hols. Americans, some will point out, have more disposable income than others – which certainly helps in these situations. But I also know of one Dartford man who’d sell off his missus if it meant he’d get a ticket to England v Slovenia.

So South Africans, you’ve been forewarned: the Americans are coming – and they couldn’t be more excited.  In fact, the USA v England match in Rustenburg on June 12 is not only already sold out – it’s widely expected to be the most-watched soccer game in the history of American television.

Other countries who’ve already bought large number of tickets to the World Cup include the United Kingdom (21,614), Mexico (11,893), Australia (11,804), Germany (9,692), Brazil (5,891), Canada (4,642), France (4,268) and Israel (3,677).  More than 70% of tickets (413,072) have been allocated to South African residents.

And for everyone still interested in procuring themselves a seat to this summer’s tournament, there’s still hope: the fourth and final phase of World Cup tickets sales kicked off last week and will be open until April 7^th.
