Hargreaves Isn’t the Only One Struggling to Get Fit

Can you imagine a greater disappointment than missing the World Cup because of an injury?  You’ve trained hard your entire life. You’ve dedicated your life to this dream. It’s something you’ve fantasized about forever. And then, right before those dreams are realized, you plant your foot the wrong way or get caught in an awkward tackle that leaves you sidelined.  Suddenly, you face a race against time to recover and get back in shape. Here are some of football’s high-profile stars who are in danger of watching South Africa from the physio room.

First up: The Dutch Destroyer

Robin Van Persie (Holland)

Who knows where Arsenal would be right now if they still had their Dutch marksman?  (First place for the otherwise gun-shy Gunners wouldn’t be out of the question.)  As it is, Arsenal is counting down the days until their striker returns to the fold – and so is Holland. The 26-year-old striker, who ruptured ankle ligaments during a friendly in November, will begin intensive fitness work soon. Club manager Arsene Wenger is hopeful Van Persie will be back in the mix for the final few games of the season. With Dirk Kuyt and Klaas Jan Huntelaar, the Netherlands have enough cover, but a healthy Van Persie represents their only route to the final.
