Owen who? For quite a long time, the Manchester United midfielder was considered the lynchpin to England’s midfield, a hard-nosed tackler who’d be unleashed, like an attack dog, to hound the opposing team’s playmaker into submission. But due to persistent knee problems, it’s been a year-and-a-half and counting since he last played for United. After extensive rehabilitation, Hargreaves had just returned to light training. But Sir Alex Ferguson recently omitted him from United’s squad for the Champions League knockout stages, hinting he doesn’t expect him back anytime soon. With a glut of central midfielders, England should be okay in either case.
