Scholes’ 100th. Paul Scholes has scored some crucial goals during his illustrious Manchester United career, but few could prove more decisive than his historic 100th. Missing the injured Wayne Rooney, United travelled South to Molineux hoping to take top spot for the first time this year. Veteran midfield dynamo Paul Scholes popped up with a moment of genius in the 73rd minute to help United edge Wolves 1-0 and leapfrog Chelsea and Arsenal into first place.
Taxi for Zola? When David Gold and David Sullivan took up the reins at West Ham, Gianfranco Zola must have thought his troubles were over: No more selling players to balance the books; No more buying on the cheap and blooding inexperienced youth; No more concerns about wages. How the Italian could be so wrong. Since Gold and Sullivan’s takeover, Zola’s position at West Ham has become a constant source of tabloid speculation. Having tangled with the owners over all the aforementioned issues, it’s hard to see how Zola can remain in charge in East London if their recent 2-1 loss to Bolton is to have any bearing.
Donovan signs off in style. Fresh from missing a late howler against Tottenham last weekend, on-loan US star Landon Donovan came off the bench to score his second goal at Goodison Park and his side’s 4th in their 5-1 win over Hull City. Desperate to prove his quality in Europe after several failed sojourns in Germany, Donovan’s arrival on Merseyside earlier this year coincided with Everton’s meteoric rise up the table. But with Donovan due to return to the LA Galaxy on March 15th, the Toffees will have to rekindle the love affair next season.
Gunners keep on fighting. Despite key personnel continually falling victim to serious injury, Arsenal’s single-minded challenge for the Premiership title shows no signs of abating. The Gunners dispatched a poor Burnley side at the Emirates 3-1 and amazingly sit only two goals behind second place Chelsea, who beat them convincingly home and away.
