It's Got Balls and Brains

Are the Red Knights better than the Glazers?

Are the Red Knights better than the Glazers?

So this is what we understand so far: a group of wealthy fans are unhappy with the way their club is run. They are unhappy with the American owners who are draining the club of profits to pay off the debt used to buy the club. After annual payments on the debt, there is not enough money left over for big money transfers. Large portions of the fan base are pretty disgusted and there are matches where the stadium is not full, something which never happened in the past. Protests against the Americans are being organised by the fans.

We’re talking about Liverpool, right?

Actually no.  It’s the boys from Old Trafford.

What, you ask, is all the fuss about? Why are they complaining? Three Premier League titles on the trot. A hatful of other trophies thrown in. Two Champions League finals. And the manager even has a sizeable transfer kitty to eat away.

This group of disgruntled fans are going to assemble 50 people with £20 million each to burn (or is it 20 people with £50 million each to burn) and buy the club from the Glazers. Are they kidding? Now if you loaned (or, worse yet, gave) your local club £20 million, you want something for that. Maybe a seat on the board? Maybe lunch in the directors dining room with your family? Maybe a meet up with Sir Alex Ferguson? Can you see the Red Knights crowd at the board meetings or on match day? And does everyone get a vote on transfers?

The bottom line is that the huge debt that the Glazers have put on the club is unconscionable.  But they did it. And it’s there. As for the Red Knights, we can only say good night.
