Brazil's Fab World Cup Weapon

Brazil's Fab World Cup Weapon

The 29-year-old striker, who plays for Seville, is the target man in coach Dunga’s defensively-minded setup. Despite somehow avoiding the media and marketing glare that follows Brazil ’s top goal scorers, Fabiano is immensely talented. He’s got a goal scorer’s killer instinct, helped by remarkable composure inside the 18-yard box.

Before last year’s Confederations Cup, Fabiano pledged to score one goal a game. He kept his promise, scoring a brace in the final to help Brazil overturn a 2-0 deficit to the USA and win 3-2. On his return to South Africa this summer, he has refrained from making a similar prediction. Perhaps it’s the niggling thigh injury which he has had trouble shaking off. Or else it could be the relatively patchy form he’s been in lately; he has failed to score for Brazil in the eight matches leading into the tournament, with his last international goal coming back in September’s qualifier with Argentina.

But only a fool would ever underestimate Luis Fabiano. He has always scored crucial goals for club and country. And if the Boys from Brazil are going to make it to this year’s final, then Fabiano will no doubt play a starring role.  “Once I have got my first goal, then the others will follow,” he has said ominously. In fact, you could do a lot worse than putting down a tenner for him to win the Golden Boot.
