Cameroon Lead African World Cup Exodus

Raymond Domenech might not be enjoying this summer’s World Cup as much he would have liked, but he’s not the only French boss who has failed to impress in South Africa.

Cameroon‘s 2-1 capitulation to Denmark awards Paul Le Guen and his troops the unenviable honour of becoming the first African nation to depart this summer’s showpiece. And coach Paul Le Guen is about to pay the ultimate price for his side’s failure.

When Samuel Eto’o lashed Pierre Webo‘s square ball past Thomas Sorensen in the Denmark net to give Cameroon an early lead, commentators around the world hailed Eto’o‘s “goal for Africa.” The Indomitable Lions went wild and celebrations in the Loftus Versfeld Stadium could even be heard above the drone of the vuvuzelas.

Eighty minutes later and the dream was dead. Cameroon were sent packing and another French coach had failed to inspire his motley crew of underachievers. While Paul Le Guen has done admirably taken full responsibility for the West African side’s miserable performances, it’s hard to see the former Lyon man’s tenure with the Indominitable Lions extend beyond their last Group E match against the Netherlands.
