The “Congratulations, You’ve Earned Yourself a Move to Manchester City” Award
Fabio Coentrao. Young. Confident. Creative. Dependable. Portugal’s surprise stand out at this World Cup is putting to shame the claim that Ashley Cole is the best left back in the world. Benfica have slapped a hefty price tag on the 23-year-old – but that will only further pique the interests of the suits at big-money clubs like Man City.

The “Congratulations, You’ve Earned Yourself a Move to Bolton” Award
Diego Lugano. The 30-year-old Uruguay captain was the best centre back during the group stages – showing John Terry and others that age isn’t necessarily a detriment in the heart of defence. The strong, capable defender is currently playing at Fenerbahce, but would be a welcome addition to the Premier League, especially at one of the lower-tier clubs looking to shore up their backline.

The “Nike Would Like to Have its Money Back, Please” Award
Wayne Rooney. If you’re up for a bit of self-flagellation, replay the England v Algeria match and take another look at the Manchester United man’s trials and tribulations. We can hardly remember a well-regarded superstar suffer such a dramatic dip in form – not just in one match, but through the entire tournament. Rooney’s first touch was absolutely abysmal. His second touch was worse.
