But if you exclude Germany and Spain’s home-based players from the totals, the new numbers suddenly paint a different picture: Serie A now leads with 28 players still in the World Cup who are not Italian. The Premiership has 19 foreign players in the tournament.  The Bundesliga has 14 representatives. La Liga has 13.

Whether the huge presence of top foreign talent in England or Italy is hindering the development of home-grown players is another argument for another day. But based on these statistics at least, foreign players in the Premiership do not seem to be at any disadvantage at the World Cup when compared to foreign players in other leagues – which sweeps the legs out from underneath the theory that the English Premiership is too demanding.
