And that might ultimately be why Argentina ’s FA gave their prodigal son the heave-ho. Maradona wanted so badly to stay on and coach Argentina at the next World Cup in Brazil – where the only serious contenders to the host nation may well be its neighbours to the south.

But now, we must contend with the growing fear that we might never see Maradona near a football pitch again. Sure, it would be wonderful to see him bring his talent and experience to a professional club in Europe – but none of the biggest clubs would probably ever take the risk of hiring such a volatile character. Instead, a career in government likely beckons. And where else does passion trump substance than in politics?
