Robinho’s Future Up For Grabs?
It’s no secret that Manchester City‘s Brazilian striker Robinho hates life in the Premiership. 18 months into a lucrative 4-year deal at the Eastlands and Robinho was on the plane back to Brazil to join boyhood club Santos.
Robinho‘s loan period at Santos has now expired. With the player refusing to return to England and Manchester City insisting that he do so, Robinho‘s future is once again set to dominate the back pages. This time, however, Robinho might not be smiling at the end.
Two summers ago, Robinho arrived at Manchester City amidst a whirlwind of hype. One of the stars of La Liga with Real Madrid, City‘s signing of Robinho‘s signaled Sheikh Mansour‘s intent: Manchester City are a force to be reckoned with and money is no obstacle to success. We should have taken stock from the fact that Los Blancos were willing to let the mercurial genius depart. Instead we championed the arrival of another superstar eager to test his skills in the Premier League.
Robinho‘s first season in England wasn’t bad. He scored 14 goals in 31 League appearances and exhibited an energy and inventiveness that had made him one of the most beloved figures in the modern game. His second season in Manchester was completely different. Missing three months due to injury, Robinho dropped down the pecking order and never regained the confidence that saw City fans once sing his name from the terraces.
Two years after controversially joining Manchester City from Real Madrid, Robinho is at another crossroads in his career. Seething at Manchester City‘s insistence that he must return to England, the Robinho affair is set to take a dramatic turn in the coming month.
