Premiership Football Conclusions: Week One

Forget the World Cup, proper football is back! The Premier League kicked off in style this past weekend offering up its usual blend of intrigue and excitement. A number of questions linger: Can Chelsea‘s pensioners defend their title? After a poor World Cup, will Wayne Rooney return to his majestic best? Can Manchester City‘s money propel them to the title? All these questions and more will be answered over the next nine months.

Blackpool Rock. Everyone’s tip for the drop Blackpool, surprised even their own supporters with a Premier League debut 4-0  thrashing of Wigan Athletic. Led by former West Ham and Aston Villa marksman Marlon Harewood, the big, burly signing can still pack a punch as he notched two goals in two minutes to end Wigan‘s hopes of salvaging a point in front of their own fans.

Blues back with a bang. Chelsea kicked off the new campaign right where they left off. Bagging eight goals against Wigan on the final day of last season to secure their first Premier League title in three years, Chelsea continued their sweet scoring streak at Stamford Bridge on Saturday by thrashing West Brom 6-0. Didier Drogba was inspirational for Carlo Ancelotti‘s men as his hat-trick and general nuisance throughout the 90 minutes shows their still juice left in the old Ivorian.
