A brace from Tottenham left-back Gareth Bale, either side of Ricardo Fuller‘s toe-poke for Stoke, snatched all three points for Spurs ahead of their important mid-week Champions League qualifier. On a day that also re-iterated the necessity for television replays – Stoke‘s Jon Walters had a headed goal on 86 minutes overlooked by the officials – Harry Redknapp will hope Gareth Bale continues in the same rich vein of form that had Inter Milan sniffing around towards the end of last season.

Carroll Leads New Look Newcastle. Andy Carroll scored his first top flight hat-trick as Newcastle United announced their return to the Premiership by humiliating Aston Villa 6-0. Joey Barton opened the scoring for the Toon and Kevin Nolan chipped in with two more goals as Chris Hughton‘s side stormed to victory. But it could have been a very different story had John Carew not blazed his penalty over the Newcastle bar with the score delicately balanced at 0-0.
