Premiership Football Conclusions: Week Three
‘Shock’ was the word of the weekend as Wigan finally bagged their first three points (against Tottenham!), Manchester City lost their first match (against Sunderland!), Arsenal muscled to victory (against Blackburn!) and Avram Grant lost another match (ok, so that’s not so surprising.)
Rodallega Reverses Rout. On their last visit to Tottenham in November 2009, Roberto Martinez‘s Wigan were hammered 9-1. Perhaps it was revenge. Perhaps it was Tottenham‘s draining mid-week Champions League qualifier. Whatever the reason, Hugo Rodallega‘s second-half strike proved the difference as Wigan picked up their first points of the season at White Hart Lane. In sharp contrast, West Ham manager Avram Grant could boast no such talent as his side become only one of two teams yet to earn a single point this campaign.
Sunderland and Tevez snare Manchester City. Fresh from their confidence boosting 3-0 home win over Liverpool and a 2-0 Europa League midweek victory over FC Timisoara, Manchester City suffered a blip against Sunderland with a 1-0 loss thanks to a 94th minute penalty converted by Darren Bent. Despite Manchester City‘s early season euphoria being burst late in injury time, it was Carlos Tevez‘s earlier howler that will feature in all future blooper videos. Tevez, usually such a reliable finisher, missed an open goal from 12 yards after Yaya Toure neatly set up the Argentinean striker.
