World Cup 2010
The 2010 World Cup couldn’t have come at a better time. With the global economy in tatters, conflicts raging in the Middle East, and environmental catastrophes of biblical proportions occurring on a regular basis, everyone is eager for the distraction of a month of top-class football.
Predicting a World Cup winner is often a foolhardy exercise and this year is no different. The smart money points to Brazil or Spain – but the truth is that Spain are notorious underachievers in major tournaments and the current crop of Brazilians have discarded the joga bonito for a more unadorned approach.
So it’s really up for grabs for a number of teams, including the perennial contenders Italy , Germany and Argentina. It’s also an opportunity for some unheralded players to make a name for themselves – or in the case of people like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, to cement their place in the pantheon of greats.
We’ve been following the ins and outs of the tournament for well over a year now, but we are ramping up our coverage during the final weeks before June 11th’s opening match. So check back often for the inside scoop on the greatest tournament in the history mankind.
